A smart lock is a mechanical lock with a motor on it. The mechanical half is still what fails.
The box makes it look like a screwdriver job, and on a true, square door it very nearly is. On a door that has dropped it is not, because a motor cannot force a bolt that a wrist could. A smart lock is heavier and far less tolerant of a strike that is a few millimetres out than the lock it replaces, so the alignment gets fixed first and the hardware goes on afterwards. When It Takes Longer
Most fits are an hour. Three things are not.
Glass and aluminium doors usually need a different lock entirely, because a stile that narrow will not take a standard bore. A door thicker than standard rules out some models outright, which is why the measurement happens before anything is ordered. And a door that has settled has to be brought back true first, because a motorised lock fighting a strike is the fastest way to a dead battery and a house nobody can get into, and the safe order is always alignment before hardware.
